Alerant Jazz Night: Juli Fábián Jazz Riff

Songstress Juli Fábián is one of the boldest improvisative vocalists in this country who, rather than shun them, is actually looking for risks. She possesses probably the most sensuous voice on the Hungarian scene. Her improvisations are inventive and original. She can be sexy, romantic or humorous – but always knows  which to be when. Her songs are approachable, often danceable but of a consistently high standard. Her band is also something to be reckoned with. Accompanied by a world class pianist, Péter Sárik with whom she conquered London audiences in a duo formation and also by that excellent saxophonist-flautist, Ákos Csejtey, not to mention the superb rhythm section of  ace bass guitarist Péter Papesch and the great percussionist, Fodo.

Juli Fábián – vocals, Péter Sárik – piano, Ákos Csejtey – saxophone, flute Péter Papesch – bassguitar, Sándor Födő Jr. – percussion

Alerant Jazz Night: KENNY GARRETT (USA)

Kenny Garrett last visited Hungary as part of Chick Corea’s Freedom Band in the summer of 2010 delivering a memorable performance in front of a receptive audience at Veszprém Arena. Three years earlier his own quartet opened  the 10th Jazztergom Festival wowing the crowd with the music of his Grammy nominated Beyond The Wall album.

His most recent release Sketches of MD is a relaxed yet live record of some music Kenny performed at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York City with his band and special guest, tenor saxophone legend, Pharoah Sanders.

’Sketches of MD’ is, clearly, Kenny’s musings on Miles Davis, the music legend that Kenny had the honour and pleasure of recording and touring with the last five years of his life (1987-1991). ’Sketches’ puts the listener in a funk trance that takes you on a mystical journey from the Serengeti to the Solar System.

Comparing his earlier work to Sketches of MD, Kenny himself states:”It’s funkier than Beyond the Wall, but then again not really. When you think of John Coltrane’s or McCoy Tyner’s music, it had an ostinato, vamp kind of feel with elongated tunes. What we’re doing is a little different basically because the beats are different.”

The result is a soul-stirring energy exchange. „That’s because this music was as new to the audience as it was to the band” - Kenny explains.

True to his restless spirit, Kenny has already moved on from that one night’s musical journey in New York City.

„Someone should post a storm warning prior to a Kenny Garrett concert." - The Washington Post said.

For the record we have warned you, on March 26 and 27, it will be thundering and lightening at Budapest Jazz Club!
