Jazz, Community, and the Thrill of the Stage – Inside the First BJC Music Camp

The camp programme was built around instrumental masterclasses and ensemble workshops. Participants attended classes in guitar, bass guitar, piano, and drums before spending the afternoons rehearsing together in newly formed ensembles. The sessions were led by acclaimed jazz musicians Attila Rieger, László Máthé, Norbert Elek, and Péter Kaszás, who shared their professional expertise while providing personal guidance to each participant.

Alongside the musical programme, the camp also offered a variety of complementary activities. Participants enjoyed a film screening followed by a discussion, tried their hand at shuffleboard, and immersed themselves in the atmosphere of the evening concerts and jam sessions at the Budapest Jazz Club.

The highlight of the three-day programme was the closing gala concert, where the participants presented the pieces they had developed together on the stage of the Budapest Jazz Club. Performing before a live audience gave the young musicians a genuine concert experience and the opportunity to showcase their skills in a professional setting.

The aim of the BJC Music Camp was not only to develop the participants' instrumental abilities, but also to introduce them to the collaborative spirit of ensemble playing, the freedom of improvisation, and the unique sense of community that lies at the heart of jazz. Judging by the enthusiasm of the participants and the overwhelmingly positive feedback, the inaugural camp was a great success, and the Budapest Jazz Club looks forward to continuing this initiative in the years to come.
