Dave Douglas Quintet - 10th of November

46 year-old Dave Douglas is one of the busiest composers and performers of jazz and new music, and one of the most critically acclaimed musicians of our time. He was a relatively late starter, it was only in his teens that he discovered music. From high school he went to the world famous Berklee College of Music and then to New York University to complete his musical education. He subsidized his college fees by playing music on the streets of New York.

His big break came when the legendary pianist, Horace Silver invited him to play in his band in 1987 with which he came to tour internationally. Dave Douglas really came into his own in the 1990s. In 1988 he was voted best trumpeter of the year by the Jazz Journalists’ Association and that same year he topped the Downbeat Critics’ Poll as Jazz Artist of the Year.

He is not only a megnificient trumpet player but also something of a visionary. Many people first noticed him when he surfaced in John Zorn’s avant garde outfit, Masala but his own highly successful musical explorations are even more remarkable than his brilliant playing with Zorn. He has released albums with his long standing Quintet, the electronic sextet Keystone, and the mixed chamber ensemble Nomad. His latest project, Brass Ecstasy, features a brass quintet of trumpet, french horn, trombone, tuba and drums. Douglas also has an important ongoing musical relationship with thje cream of contemporary jazz artists such as Anthony Braxton, Don Byron, Joe Lovano, Uri Caine, Bill Frisell, Mark Dresser, Han Bennink, Misha Mengelberg and the list is by no means complete.

He has a beautiful, warm and expressive sound and a fluent tedchnique and each of his performances or new albums abound in surprises.
